From Software Industry to Art Therapy: My Journey of Transformation


Introduction


If you had told me years ago that I would leave my career in the software industry to become an art therapist, I might not have believed you. I had spent years developing my skills, working in tech, and thriving in a fast-paced corporate world. Yet, something always felt incomplete.


This is the story of how I found my true calling—transitioning from a structured, analytical field to one filled with creativity, healing, and human connection.


The Highs and Lows of the Software Industry


For years, I worked in software engineering, solving complex problems, working on projects, and being part of a fast-moving industry. The work was intellectually stimulating, but it also came with intense stress, long hours, and constant pressure to perform.


I saw firsthand how workplace stress affects mental health—not just in myself but in my colleagues as well. Burnout, anxiety, and exhaustion were common yet rarely talked about. While I was passionate about problem-solving, I found myself craving a deeper, more meaningful way to help people.


Art: My Personal Escape from Stress


Throughout my life, art had always been my safe space. Whether it was knitting, painting, or crafting, creating something with my hands gave me a sense of calm and balance. Whenever the demands of work became overwhelming, I found comfort in picking up a paintbrush and letting colors flow.


Over time, I began to realize: art wasn’t just a hobby—it was my way of processing emotions, de-stressing, and making sense of life’s chaos. But could it also be a way to help others?

Leaving the software industry wasn’t an easy decision. It meant starting over, studying again, and stepping into an unfamiliar field. But deep down, I knew this was the right path.


I enrolled in the Master’s program in Art Therapy at Miecat Institute in Melbourne, a journey that was both challenging and deeply fulfilling. I immersed myself in understanding how creative expression supports mental well-being and began working with clients through organizations like CATA (Creative Arts Therapy Australia).


Each session reinforced what I already knew—art is a powerful tool for self-discovery, healing, and emotional resilience.


Where I Am Today


Now, as an art therapist, I get to do work that truly aligns with my values and passions. I help:

👩‍👧 Mothers and children strengthening their bond through creativity

🖌 Individuals looking for a safe, non-verbal way to express emotions


Making this transition was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken, but it was also the most rewarding. I’ve learned that sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead to the deepest fulfillment.
